Railroad Tunnel Trail 04/04/2007
The tunnel on the Mogollan Rim is all that remains of the plan to build a railroad from Nogales to Lee's Ferry, Utah in the 1880s.
The trail goes down steeply, then through a beautiful wooded wash until you look up and see what is left of the old stone house remains probably used for storage during construction. Amazing how man can find the worst places to try to build something.
Back at the trailhead there's another road that takes you to the General Springs Cabin. This is a forest service cabin that sits in a pretty meadow. Can you imagine living here for weeks at a time with no one around?
I'm not sure when this area burned but there is new growth amidst the burned trees
Looking out from the road it reminded me of Mt. St. Helens
Great view from an overlook
Yes, it's snow
The trail was VERY ROCKY all the way down to the valley
You wander around looking for cairns and some sign of the tunnel. This is your only clue r
Once you climb up you can see there's quite a bit of this old building left
The tunnel entrance is pretty big
I'm about half way up the dirt into the tunnel
This side trail wanders around the mountain from the tunnel
Going back up the trail
